Abstract

International news flow has generated so much controversy, creating polemics among the nations in both the Northern and the Southern hemispheres.
Not withstanding the accusations and counter accusations the controversy has generated, nations in the Southern Hemisphere have taken it upon themselves to do battle at any forum where international news flows and reports arefeatured. Since scholars across the globe hold different views and opinion on what constitutes the true concept of international news flow and report; this, therefore, suggests that more research is required in this area of
study. This study focuses on the press coverage of African nations by a Nigerian weekly magazine. The study examines how Tell magazine covered 51 Africa nations (Nigeria excluded) including nations on Islands of Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The research shows that African nations were not properly covered during the period under study and most of the news used by Tell magazine originated from non-African sources. The study concludes, that coverage of and news flow within the less developed nations is absolutely essential because it holds the key to correcting the held negative notions about less developed countries by the transnational media giants of Europe and North America. But for this to be possible, the study suggests that Africa and indeed, the entire Non-Aligned Movement need to put in place the machinery to compete effectively with the media of Northern Hemisphere as we begin a new century-where information and communication technology (leT) has taken over or supplanted mechanical backed industrial revolution as a major agent of development and social engineering.
