Abstract

This paper examines the communications patterns/ strategies of GSM serviceproviders in Nigeria Vmobile (formerly Econet Wireless), MTN, M-tel and
Glomobile. The analysis, done from a historical perspective, highlights the wholistic marketing communications approaches of these networks, from their
inceptions to the present day. The paper also takes a retrospective look at the state of the telecommunication sector before the deregulation, noting as it were, the low tele-density and epileptic services prevalent then. Furthermore, the paper underscores the impact of GSM service on the people and how it affects positively all facets of human endeavour in Nigeria. The paper equally provides an overview of what communication patterns/strategies should entail. The authors note that the three privately-owned service providers: Vmobile, MTN, and Glomobile have been adept in engaging in aggressive marketing communications, in order to gain leverage over each other, and that their messages are persuasively-packaged, logically-presented and strategicallycrafted, so as to position themselves in the minds of the people. The paper also establishes the dynamism of the marketing communication appeals of these networks, at the three different stages of their campaigns: pioneering, competitive and retentive.
